Today we depart for Poland. Meals will be served on our flight. July 24: Arrival in Poland Depending on the time and airport of arrival we may check out a few different sights on our way to our overnight location. July 25: Częstochowa Today we visit Częstochowa, the most famous pilgrimage center of Poland, Jasna Góra Monastery. This is Poland’s national shrine and home to the Black Madonna, a sacred icon that is historically linked to protecting the Polish people. Said to have been painted by St. Luke the Evangelist on a cypress wood panel from a table used by the Holy Family in Nazareth, it attracts millions of pilgrims from all over the world. The day before his death, John Paul II sent a letter to the religious of the Shrine of Jasna Góra , in Częstochowa, "I entrust our Homeland, the whole Church and myself to her maternal protection," said the Pope in his letter, addressed to Father Izydor Matuszewski, prior general of the monks of St. Paul the Hermit, of the monastery of Jasna Gora. July 26: Kraków WYD Opening Ceremonies This morning we explore Krakow. Highlights include the Old Town, Historic Sukiennic, Wit Stwosz’s acclaimed altar masterpiece at St. Mary’s Basilica, and Wawel Castle and Cathedral – all remarkable symbols of Poland’s historic identity. WYD This evening we attend the opening mass and ceremonies of WYD 2016. July 27: Lagiewniki National Shrine of Divine Mercy * St. John Paul II Center WYD Spend the morning at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Lagiewniki; dedicated by Pope Saint John Paul II. We will have the opportunity to visit the convent chapel and pray at the Tomb of St. Faustina Kowalska. We also explore the newly opened St. John Paul II Center. WYD In the late afternoon participate in WYD Catechesis. July 28: WYD Morning Catechesis, Arrival and Welcome of our Holy Father Pope Francis. July 29: WYD Morning Catechesis, WYD events, Stations of the Cross. July 30: WYD Pilgrimage walk to the Closing Mass, evening Vigil with the Holy Father. July 31: WYD Closing Mass with the Holy Father. August 1: Wadowice * Auschwitz In the morning visit Wadowice, the birthplace of Saint Pope John Paul II, celebrate mass in the Basilica there where he was baptized and visit the John Paul II museum built in his childhood home. In the afternoon we head to Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp where millions of Poles, Jews, Christians and others lost their lives. A Private Guide will show us several gut wrenching sites, as well as the starvation cell where St. Maximillian Kolbe died. This is an important lesson on recent history and his saintly martyrdom. August 2: Poland * Rome Today we say our farewells to our new friends in Poland and transfer to the airport for our flight to Rome. Upon arrival in Rome, you will be transferred to your hotel. You are in the Eternal City –one of the greatest cities in the world. Remainder of the day is free to relax. August 3: Rome This morning we will visit St. Peter’s Basilica, including St. John Paul II’s tomb in Vatican City. Millions come every year to these breathtaking pilgrimage sites. This is the world’s largest Basilica, designed by architects such as Michelangelo and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. After lunch, we will tour the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, Raphael’s Room, and more. For those that still have the energy, depending on time we may have the opportunity to tour a few of the city’s famous monuments and places such as, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Novona, Basilica of St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major. August 4: Rome * Assisi Today we start early, driving to Assisi. We will have a full day to enjoy the peaceful and tranquil village of Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis. Visit St. Mary of the Angels Basilica, St. Francis’ Porziuncola, and Capella Del Transito. Pray in the Shrine, inspired by Giotto’s frescoes of the life of St. Francis. Visit the monastery and the Basilica of St. Clare to pray before the San Damiano crucifix from which Jesus told St. Francis to rebuild His church. Time to ourselves to explore Assisi. This evening return to Rome. August 5: Rome * USA After breakfast where we share our delightful memories together, transfer to the airport in Rome for our flight home. Ciao Italia! |
